Faculty Flashbacks: Dave Smith, History and Football
Can you imagine trying to make world history interesting to a bunch of high school sophomores? For some of us Dave Smith accomplished that and more. He made it fun. We remember him talking about the Crusaders buying boats from "A little old lady from Pasadena who had only driven them on Sundays." When he wasn't making history fun or coaching one of the football teams, he could usually be found outside the building smoking a cigarette. In those days, teachers who smoked didn't have to hide it from the students. The lessons coming from his very deep, but soft, voice helped many of us realize that learning could be fun -- and eventually beneficial.
We'd Recognize Her Anywhere: Mary Stephenson Koury
If you lived anywhere near Henry Neil Elementary School or attended Sacred Heart School, you remember Mary Stephenson. Her grinning presence was always there when someone was playing a prank or just having a good time. She somehow came up with the mischievous ideas but never seemed to get caught herself. Never a dull or unhappy moment when Mary was around.
Faculty Flashbacks: Cletus Noecker, Modern Problems, Journalism, Student Senate
Because many of you have mentioned Cletus Noecker in your comments about others, we thought it was time to concentrate on the man himself. Modern Problems, Journalism (including the Blue & Gold and the Arrow) and Student Senate were all included in his kingdom, which he ruled with great authority. Noecker was famous for taking off his glasses every other minute to make a point, or call on a student or look concerned as he waited for someone to come up with the answer (as in the photo above). He pushed us hard to think and to find the right answers. Please add your own memories below.
Class of 66 Mileposts: President Kennedy Assassination
The assassination of President Kennedy is one of those life-changing events that rocks the world. Everybody remembers where they were and who told them about the shooting in Dallas that November day in 1963.
What class were you in when you learned that President John F. Kennedy had been shot? How did the class react? How did you react?
