Richard Jerome “Rick” Davies, 68, of St. Simons Island, Georgia,
passed away on July 27, 2016, in Brunswick, Georgia, at Southeast Georgia
Health System. He was a member of the Aberdeen Central High School Class of
1966.
Rick was an active and popular class leader at Central, a
distinguished student and alumnus of the University of South Dakota and a
successful businessman who played an important role in the development of
broadband Internet in the nation.
Beyond his successful business career, and stretching from a very
early age to his retirement, Rick’s passion was golf, which he started playing
at the age of 12 under the guidance of his grandfather, Bruce Johnston. He
competed as a young amateur in Aberdeen’s annual Dakota Open golf tournament,
and could be found most summer mornings on one of the city’s two golf courses.
He traveled around the world with friends to play on new courses
with friends and business partners. He was extremely proud of his three
holes-in-one over his lifetime.
In 2006, Rick and his wife, Joyce, retired to St. Simons Island.
For the past three years Rick was Captain of the Sea Island Golf Team that
participated in the annual Oglethorpe Cup. He was Past President of the Sea
Island Senior Golf Association and Past President of the Island Club
Homeowner's Board.

He loved history, traveling the world with Joyce, and fishing,
especially with his grandson Max. Rick became a proud Denver Bronco season
ticket holder in 1970.
Rick was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on November 3, 1947. Raised
in Aberdeen, he graduated from Central in 1966. He then attended the University
of South Dakota in Vermillion, from which he received a BS/BA with emphasis in
Accounting in 1970. At USD he was active in the Delta Tau Delta social fraternity
and the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity. He was later honored by the
University as a Distinguished Alumnus.
After graduation, he joined Arthur Young & Co. in Denver,
Colorado, becoming a Certified Public Accountant. In 1979, he joined American
Television and Communications Corporation, which later became Time Warner
Cable.
In 1992, he moved to Wilton, Connecticut, with Time Warner
Cable, and retired in 2006 as Senior Vice President of Business Development.
Rick was instrumental in the development of Road Runner, the
first cable delivered high-speed internet service, which led to the development
of the Broadband internet business. Today it is one of the most critical
components of Time Warner Cable. He was on the Board of Directors of TW
Telecom, a subsidiary of Time Warner Cable.

events or Stephanie's many extracurricular activities, especially swimming and
golf. He was a doting grandfather to Max and Lucy, who were the light of his
life. He kept the entire extended family connected.
He is survived by his loving wife
of 40 years, Joyce (Delaney) Davies; a daughter, Stephanie Davies Martin (Jake)
of Baltimore, Maryland; grandson, Maxwell Richard Martin of Baltimore;
granddaughter, Lucille Delaney Martin of Baltimore; brothers, Robert Davies of

Rick and John were friends since grade school. They remained close after college and were best man in each other's weddings. We spent a lot of time visiting each other in Rapid City and Denver. John and Linda were on his first date with Joyce--a Denver Bronco's game. When we arrived in Polson, MT for their wedding--John thought he'd found the place he wanted to retire. Flathead Lake and the cherry orchards were inviting. We visited Rick and Joyce this past January and Rick loved showing us his beloved islands--St. Simons, Sea Island, & Jekyll.. Rick was disappointed in the change of the reunion date and having to miss seeing his classmates. He encouraged John to attend. We will both miss his quick wit and smile. Linda and John Hendrikson
