Monroe Junior High School’s Newspaper: The Monroe Messenger by Bob Couser

We may remember our Class of ’66 high school publication, The Blue and Gold, which was published twice a month by those classmates who took Journalism II classes.  The staff included feature editor Dianne Evenson, news editor Susan Hodgson, sports editor Evan Dickhaut, and business manager Kathy Merchant, noting just a few of those budding members of the press.

An earlier example of this correspondence activity goes back further to the circular published by our classmates in the ninth grade at Monroe Junior High School called the Monroe Messenger, which was published semiannually.   In its’ final report by our classmates on May 3, 1963, The Messenger covered a wide variety of topics, including the successful basketball season of the Monroe Tigers, Monroe’s Cheerleaders, feature story on Dewey Hunt dreaming about Spring, editorials by Marilyn Roesch, Pam Parker, Eric Lautzenheiser, and Karen Leach to mention a few.  The staff included Editor Marilyn Roesch; News editors Sheryl Smith, Rich Hogenson, Pam Parker, Val Lindgren, JoAnn Berbos, Connie Chillson; Sports editors Jim Gerharter, Howard Bastian, Steve Burke, and Rick Davies; Reporters Linda Hunstad, Vikki Poe, John Hendrickson, Brian Lee; and advisor Mrs. Markve.  One section in our classmates' final report was the “Class Will”, which noted several bequeaths to the 8th graders, including Russell Eichelberg his name to Francie Ingribritson; Rick Davies his speed to a true comet, Comet Haroldson; Ella Inman her blonde hair to Jean Stevens; Vikki Poe her athletic ability to Susan Soike; Bob Couser his jump shot to Sheridan Wangler; Dawn Burckhard her Junior Snow Queen title to Monroe; Jerry Adams his personality to Mike Sandvig; and Marilyn Roesch was “taking everything with her.”  A few of these stories are featured in this blog.  Enjoy and Share your Memories!
