Faculty Flashbacks: Dave Smith, History and Football

Can you imagine trying to make world history interesting to a bunch of high school sophomores? For some of us Dave Smith accomplished that and more. He made it fun. We remember him talking about the Crusaders buying boats from "A little old lady from Pasadena who had only driven them on Sundays." When he wasn't making history fun or coaching one of the football teams, he could usually be found outside the building smoking a cigarette. In those days, teachers who smoked didn't have to hide it from the students. The lessons coming from his very deep, but soft, voice helped many of us realize that learning could be fun -- and eventually beneficial.
